Maybin had a 70 at the Valderrama course to match McDowell, the U.S. Open champion, at 6 under.
Martin Kaymer, who needs to win or finish second to take the top spot in the world ranking from Tiger Woods, had a 70 to drop 9 strokes behind the leaders."
